We aren’t going anywhere, but as of today, we’re going to put the monthly Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering on a hiatus for a few months. The April 6th event will be the last event until we work through our plans. There will not be an event in May.
Arizona is a terrific location to live if you’re into cars. And I use the word “cars” to cover all of the possible configurations of automobiles from sleekest exotic sports cars to the biggest beastly trucks. The weather is awesome - when the rest of the country’s automotive enthusiasts have put away their toys for the winter, we’re happily driving the mountain twisties, crawling over the rocky trails or cruising down the urban strips. There are thousands, probably tens of thousands of people in this Arizona “car community” that love their hobby. And all of these people love to congregate with others that have similar interests. They congregate and meet new friends, talk about past vehicles, talk and ask tech questions about current projects, arrange the next drive or Friday night dinner and cruise. There are so many people that love to do these things that when they hear about a monthly event where everybody is gathering they want to be there too.
And that’s amazing! But with that comes growing pains. What started out as a couple of friends meeting to have coffee has now grown into an event that averages 600-800 cars and 3000-4500 spectators every month. Hosting an event like that comes with significant responsibility and challenges. If you get a hundred people together for an event you’ll need to deal with some logistical issues, but when you get 4500 people together there are many more issues. Costs, liability, manpower, security, and space are just a few things, and all of those things each have time and planning requirements.
We do multiple events - the monthly Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering, the annual Concours in the Hills, and the annual Festival of Speed. The monthly Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering, known by many a simply Scottsdale Cars and Coffee, needs some rethinking.
Again - we aren’t going anywhere, but as of today, we’re going to put the monthly Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering on a hiatus for a few months. The April 6th event will be the last event until we work through our plans. There will not be an event in May.
We’ll be spending the next few months working through this and we’ll be back with you soon. Follow us on Facebook and subscribe to our mailing list to get updates.
